Visiting the Eames House: Modern Prefab Masterpiece

The Eameses omitted the fireplace from the final version of the house, a gesture towards technological advances in heating systems like radiant floor heating. Contrast to the cold steel framing that forms the structure, the interior of the house is warm and comforting with its wood-block floor and the soft light penetrating into each room through each day. Wooden staircases float effortlessly connecting the lower and upper levels. The use of natural materials on the interior bring the residence closer to nature, giving the appearance of the house resting softly on the earth. A row of eucalyptus trees was also planted at the front that provide shade and blend parts of the house with outdoors. Two distinct boxes make up the residence—one serves as the living quarters and the other as a studio.

So far, for the Eames house, that has meant repairing the flat roof, replacing the asbestos floor tiles and installing a device to measure air particulates. The house remains open to reservations-only visitors, who must enter without shoes. The most famous Mid-Century Modern buildings in Los Angeles, designed by Charles and Ray Eames.

This only consists of an exterior tour due to the sensitive nature of the historical materials in the house. Both provide double-height spaces at the corners and outer ends of both programs. This allows for a composition that breaks the space up rhythmetically, and is read on the exterior of the house with the exterior courtyard serving as a double-height space in between both boxes. The Eameses’ gracious live-work lifestyle continues to be an influential model. Charles and Ray moved into the House on Christmas Eve, 1949, and lived there for the rest of their lives.

But unlike its supersize neighbors, it sits far back from the cliff's edge, in a meadow dotted with eucalyptus trees. Ray Eames once told a TV interviewer that they decided to orient the house this way after having lived in the meadow waiting for the house to be built. "[I] began to think it would be criminal to put the house in the middle of the field." In 1949, Charles and Ray Eames designed and built their home on a bluff overlooking the ocean in the Pacific Palisades.

Three additional en-suite bedrooms, one with a vaulted ceiling, and custom storage throughout, and a second laundry room, ensure ample space and functionality. Access the breezy rooftop deck via the convenient elevator to soak in the breathtaking mountain and ocean views. Complete with Control4 automation and camera systems, this home epitomizes luxury living at its finest all within a few minutes from the Bluffs oceanside park and the Palisades Village. Pacific Palisades was formally founded in 1921 by a Methodist organization, and in the years that followed became a refuge for Jewish artists and intellectuals fleeing the Holocaust. Of the twenty-five Case Study Houses built, the Eames house is considered the most successful both as an architectural statement and as a comfortable, functional living space. The brash sleekness of the design made it a favorite backdrop for fashion shoots in the 1950s and 1960s.

The iconic Eames House, or Case Study House #8, is a must see for any fan of modern architecture. The house was constantly altered through their lifetimes by Charles and Ray, it is now preserved in its 1988 (date of Ray’s death, 10 years to the day after Charles) state for eternity, well 250 years; as the fundraising campaigns had it. Unusually for such an avant-garde design, the Eames publicized the house as a thoroughly lived-in, usable, and well-loved home.

For the LA District Attorney's election, residents preferred progressive challenger George Gascón over then-incumbent DA Jackie Lacey, who receives 855 votes compared to the 1,255 received by Gascón. Residents of this neighborhood preferred Biden by a wide margin, casting 1,945 votes in his favor compared to 682 votes that were cast for Trump. For the LA District Attorney's election, residents preferred progressive challenger George Gascón by a narrower margin over then-incumbent DA Jackie Lacey, who received 1,135 votes compared to the 1,232 received by Gascón.

A small courtyard with a width of four bays separates the house from the five-bay studio. These rhythmic, steel-framed bays are further divided into smaller rectangular shapes of varying sizes and are filled with either clear or frosted glass, pylon, wood, or stucco. Some sections are solid color blocks painted blue, red, yellow, white, or black. The composition of exposed structure is softened by the artful arrangement of pops of color, akin to a Mondrian painting. The play of solid and void filters the sunlight, provides privacy, and creates ever-changing shadows and patterns on the floor.

The Kappe Residence was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1996, and in 2008 it was named one of the top ten houses in Los Angeles by an expert panel selected by the Los Angeles Times. Architect Charles W. Moore designed his first house in Los Angeles for the UCLA economist and urban planning professor, Leland Burns. The house is composed of an interlocking set of shed roofs and tower, its forms reminiscent of The Sea Ranch Condominium, but adapted for a sense of the Mediterranean climate and Hollywood allusions. An interior staircase climbs up through a vertical cleft in the narrow house, and then at the very top of the third story, the stair descends outside, back down into a swimming pool court. Yes, I hope that one-day interior tours will be offered, but I also respect that historical materials are susceptible to wear.

The house and studio are separated by a concrete retaining wall that integrates seamlessly with the existing landscape. An 8-foot tall by 200-foot long concrete wall helps to anchor the site while also setting a dramatic backdrop for the architecture. The main floor features a separate dining room, ideal for hosting gatherings, and a stylish barbecue area complete with a pizza oven and fridge, perfect for outdoor entertaining.

The house was included in a list of all time top 10 houses in Los Angeles in a Los Angeles Times survey of experts in December 2008. As designers, the couple exuded an optimism about new materials and technology.

Supplies of every sort were needed to house and feed a veritable army of actors, directors and subordinates. Pacific Palisades is a largely residential community and does not attract many tourists other than day visitors to Gladstones Malibu, the local beaches, the Getty Villa or the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and I only wish I could have thought of more questions to ask at the time. Seeing their workspace was one of my favorite parts because it gave me a little understanding of their daily lives while they were dreaming up their ingenious creations. One of the craziest facts I learned on this trip is that Ray and Charles Eames purchased this site before they designed any of their iconic pieces or were famous. It’s hard to imagine a time when designers could afford to buy oceanfront property near Santa Monica so early in their careers.

In a challenge to the architectural community, the magazine announced that it would be the client for a series of homes designed to express man's life in the modern world. Pacific Palisades is a polished, coastal, quiet residential area with large private homes, spectacular ocean views, and ample amounts of park space and hiking trails. Its quaint “downtown” area, known as The Village, is home to restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques. Frequent neighborhood-sponsored events foster a true feeling of community among residents. The Eames House is one of the hidden gems of Los Angeles and located just off the PCH in Pacific Palisades, California.

The Via Mesa is located between Temescal Canyon on the west and Potrero Canyon on the east; the Huntington Palisades is located between Potrero Canyon on the west and Chautauqua Boulevard on the east. Both of these neighborhoods are within walking distance to The Village and sit upon high bluffs that look out over the Pacific Ocean. Marquez Knolls is a large area of homes located north of Sunset Boulevard beginning about a quarter mile west of The Village across Temescal Canyon on the mountain upslope known for spectacular ocean views. The Eames House is an essential milestone in the prefabrication and industrial design history. The house is constructed almost entirely from prefabricated materials carefully arranged to create a flexible and adaptable living space.
